[Podcast] A conversation with Jim Haudan CEO of Root Learning
While we’re still wrapping up VizThink Europe ’08, it’s time to begin launching VizThink ’09 in San Jose. Today is the first in a series of posts that will announce the incredible lineup of facilitators we have planned for San Jose. We’ve got lots of great things planned for this event and we’ll be telling you more about all of those in the coming weeks. We’re bringing back 10-12 of your favorite facilitators with all new content, plus over 30 new facilitators with all new topics as well.
I’m very excited to announce that Jim Haudan, CEO of Root Learning, will be one of our facilitators at VizThink ’09. [full disclosure: I worked for Root from 2000 through 2006] Jim was one of the audience favorites from our last North American event, and we’re very happy to have him back. He is the consumate facilitator having worked with executives teams around the world on both their strategy and their culture.

Jim may be even more well known for his incredible storytelling abilities. So much so, that he’s taken his years of experience and associated stories and compiled them into a new book, The Art of Engagement. The book’s primary premise is how to engage people in the strategic priorities of the business. While not primarily about visualization, Root’s experience in visualization is woven throughout the book. In addition, several chapters specifically focus on the role of visualization in employee engagement including Chapter 7: I Can’t Be Engaged If I Don’t See the Big Picture where he discusses the role of systems thinking as a key approach to engagement. Then Jim lists as the first two (of six) keys to engagement in Chapter 10: Key #1 Connecting through Images and Stories and Chapter 11: Key #2 Creating Pictures Together. These chapters as well as the many examples sprinkled throughout the over 340 pages, paint a powerful picture of how businesses can apply visualization to engage employees and execute their strategy. While a light on supporting data and research (which leads to a few questionable concepts), the book is full of practical, real world, anecdotal stories that can help any leader better engage their team and improve their results.
You can find this book and many more exciting visual thinking books check out our online store at http://www.vizthink.com/store. To hear Jim talk about some of the concepts from the book, check out our recent podcast with him:
