Vizthink: What’s Ahead in 2010?
Can we come out now? Is 2009 really over?
While many people unfortunately probably endured a worse year, to paint 2009 as a sunny, happy year here at VizThink would be doing it a disservice. At the end of the day though, we’re still here and looking back to this time twelve months ago, that’s a big deal. But now that period is behind us, let’s not dwell on it.
Looking Back at (the positives in) 2009
Most importantly, I think 2009 was actually a great year for our community as a whole:
- New Local Communities: Boston, Chicago, Milwaukee, New York City, Philadelphia all had their first event(s) in 2009.
- New Website: We actually rolled out two redesigns this past year, the latest we snuck out just before Christmas (so if you’re reading this in a feed reader be sure to click through and see it!) We’re still fine tuning and polishing it but it’s mostly powered by WordPress now so we’ve got access to a whole lot more functionality and is much easier to update so good news all around.
- VizThinkU: Last year we started VizThinkU, our new online education series – we’ve had seven so far and we’re working on even more for this year (check out Karl Gude’s upcoming workshop here). Missed last year’s? No worries – they’re all recorded and available on our site as recordings.
Looking Forward to 2010
So what’s in store for 2010? All good stuff I hope. Here’s some of the things that are in the works:
- Local Communities: Expect our local commuity events to continue (I know Austin has one scheduled for February 3 – details to come) and hopefully we’ll get a few more cities up and going too
- Improved, evolving website: As I mentioned above, we’ve just moved the site over to WordPress for the bulk of the features. This gives us a tonne more flexibility so expect to see our site continue to evolve as we build out the online community.
- More Content: Right at the end of 2009 we introduced VizLinks, our daily recap of Visual Thinking related links and content from around the web. We’re also looking for contributors to the site itself, whether as one-off posts or regular columns/contributions. I’ll put out a more formal post outlining what we’re looking for, but if you’ve got an idea for a post, or series of posts drop me an email at community@vizthink.com.
The big question: VizThink 2010
Ah, the big question on everyone’s lips, when is the next conference? The reality is, a traditional conference is a massive risk for a small company like ours but judging by the emails I’m getting there’s still a big demand for it. So, no promises, but I can assure you I’m working on finding ways to make a conference of some sort happen. If it does happen (and that’s still a big ‘if’) it won’t be anytime in the first quarter of this year, and very very unlikely that it will be in the first half.
I’ll be putting a blog post up with a survey in a few days to gauge interest so please watch for it, and be sure to respond to it when you see it.
Thanks to all of you for supporting the community
Lastly, a big thank you to everyone who has supported the community over the past few years, especially through 2009.
I hope 2010 is successful, prosperous, (and fun!) for all of you.
