The Coding of Twitter: Visualized

Last week Ben Sandofsky, a Twitter engineer, kicked off Twitter’s new Engineering blog with a visualization he created that shows Twitter’s development from it’s earliest days up until it’s latest variations.

Initially only a couple of developers the swarm continually grows as Twitter picked up momentum (and additional developers). The result is an interesting visualization showing the rapid rise of one of the web’s hottest properties:

Ben’s description from the blog:

“As a fun way to kick things off, I ran Code Swarm over a few essential production apps. Icons represent developers, and particles represent files added or modified. It doesn’t cover prototypes or contributions to open source, so it isn’t exactly scientific, but it still goes to show Twitter’s explosive growth mirrored in engineering.”
