Visual Frameworks: A Work In Progress
Much the same way people say there’s only 7 unique plots in story telling the same can also be said about visual representations. This isn’t to say there isn’t room for creativity or design but the reality is, when you dig into many visuals a lot of them have very similar underpinnings which they’ve been built upon. This isn’t a big secret and many people have tried to document and present these visual frameworks over the years.
Recently, VizThinker James Macanufo posted a set of visual frameworks that he’s been working on with the hopes of getting some feedback from the broader community.
In his own words:
“Visual frameworks are for exploring, organizing and communicating information. They help clarify thinking and generate new ideas. This prototype “deck” aims to capture, categorize and explain what the core visual frameworks are, and how they’re used. It’s a work in progress… feedback welcomed!”
James put the frameworks into three main categories: Groupings, Structures and Flows and has about 46 examples assembled so far. For more details and to share your thoughts be sure to visit his blog – You can also view the full set over on Flickr where he’s also included a description of what each image represents.
What other frameworks have you seen? Do you use any in particular? Leave your suggestions and comments below…
