Impress: a flexible display

I don’t know how I’ve missed this until today (the video was posted ~a year ago) but this is sure to make many of our VizThinkers giddy with excitement. It’s called “Impress” and it’s a flexible display prototype created by Silke Hilsing – unlike many other “flexible” displays though this particular example is not “flexible” in the sense that it can be used like a piece of fabric sense.

From the Impress blog:

Impress is the deliverance of the touch screen from its technical stiffness, coldness and rigidity. It breaks the distance in the relationship of human and technology, because it is not any longer the user which is subjected to technology, but in this case the display itself has to cave in to the human. Impress is a chance of approach of user and technology, above all, from technology.

As is usually the case, it’s easier to show you rather than explain:

Yes, that kind of flexible. While not perfect (it’s just a proof of concept really) it does spark a whole different way of considering touch screens and interaction possibilities when it comes to sketching and prototyping or interacting with visualizations and data.

I can personally start to envision a whole bunch of uses on both sides of the creation/consumption coin. How about you? Hit with a spark of inspiration? Sitting there thinking “Oh man, with that I could…”? Share your thoughts in the comments!
