The Concise: Visual Thinking & Entrepreneurship

When invited to write something about our latest business venture in the context of visual thinking and entrepreneurship, this got me analyzing exactly how we had arrived where we now are and where we are going. My understanding of entrepreneurship is seeing a business opportunity and following it, all with an element of passion and risk!

The Concise is one opportunity we decided to follow, and like all the best ideas, came out of a bad experience with bank fraud and the post trauma revelations of how it could have been prevented! Researching this subject online, even extensively, initially led to very little help in finding a solution on how it could have happened and how to prevent it happening again. The support sites available predominantly used pages and pages of text instructions explaining different ways of protecting yourself online, none actually showed you how to do it easily. We ended up researching, then researching the research and so on, just to find the simple solution. Armed with this experience and by then collaborating with an online security expert, the opportunity appeared.

We then carried out extensive market research in online security and involved anyone we could in the idea. After many discussions and some collaboration with likeminded colleagues, it became apparent this was a much bigger issue than just online security and the founding team for The Concise was formed. With our combined enthusiasms for creative online learning, new technologies, scalable actions and visual communication our business goal was set.

The ConciseThe Concise focuses on speeding up and enhancing communication through the use of visual aid with technology. By targeting a minimum of two senses (e.g: audio, visual) at any time, we assist businesses in presenting information internally (training) and externally (informal and structured conversation) teaching users/viewers the greatest amount of information in the least amount of time. Using strong visual communication combined with true learning structures and sound pedagogy, the intended message gets across in a ‘concise’, stimulating fashion with high ‘retentivity‘ – probability of retention. Usability and interaction design also play an important role in giving a seamless experience, channeling the user to focus only on their learning. This ease of use, enhanced with clean, creative visuals capturing and maintaining attention, provide a solution for many of the key issues found with current online learning implementations.

Business problems with online communication, specifically in a training context, include lack of time and funding for the customized creative conversion of content into new media, and the constant production of materials with low levels of ‘retentivity‘.

Our long term goal is to enable businesses to create their own customized, concise and rapid educational experiences via modular and scalable means.

The Concise are currently working on their first project, a new online learning experience teaching aspects of online security awareness, with the launch towards the end of this year. To find out more, follow The Concise on Twitter @theconcise.
